Writer’s Block As a Form of Fear

Have to tell you, I’m pretty proud of my husband Jake Nordlund. He turned out to be a writer, and after 13 years of being together, I didn’t see it coming.

You see, I’m a professional writer. I even have a Master of Fine Arts degree to prove it. I’ve written millions of words and gotten paid for lots of them, though most of it was ghostwriting. I jot poems on bar napkins and journal and have dozens of notebooks.

Jake? Not so much. He completely confuses autocorrect and has no idea how to use a semi-colon and most important, he tells himself he’s not a writer.

But he is.

He’s slowly setting aside his fear story, the one where “everyone” judges him for his writing, the one where he “lacks skills” and “sounds dumb.” That fear story is very old. It’s the most major form of writer’s block: A story that has kept him frozen all these years.

He’ll tell you what he did to shift this fear story if you ask him.

You may also feel you’re not a writer. What if your fear is keeping you frozen?
