I Don’t Have Time to Meditate!

There are two reasons people can’t find the time to meditate: 1. They lead stressed out chaotic lives, and 2. They have a false belief that meditating requires magical peace and silent alone-ness BEFORE sitting down.

If your life is chaotic, you will need to prioritize those 20 minutes with the guided recording until you’ve practiced enough to ground in any time, any place. Think for a moment. You’ve practiced hundreds of skills for hours on end: How to get to the next level in your online game, how to sort clean socks, how to drink an alcoholic beverage, how to engage in your sport-of-choice actively and intelligently.

You have proven that you’re both smart and capable, and you know that practice improves your skills. Guided meditation is no different. It’s a matter of priorities.

If you believe meditating is an orange-robe monk sitting under a tree with little birds twittering around his head as he breathes for hours on end, well, that’s only one picture of meditating. Why not stop reading right now, take one breath, and imagine yourself (really see yourself) sitting in a particular chair in a particular room (it could be the bathroom or your parked car) listening to a recording of my voice (through earbuds or your phone) for 20 simple minutes.

How does your body feel in this picture you have of yourself? Relaxed and refreshed? How does your mind feel? Slower and clearer? How do your emotions feel? Balanced and positive? It’s absolutely OK if you don’t feel better from one breath and one picture in your head. You are imagining what COULD BE, not what IS.

Try again. One breath and see yourself meditating to a recording of my voice.

Ahhh. That’s better. But the questions: What does her voice sound like? What does she say? What’s supposed to happen?
